“My RX8 is broken, so I bought this MG that doesn’t run. I’ll take it to the meet later this month.” Additionally: “My Frankentriumph won’t be done in time for the meet, so I bought this Fiat X1/9"
Other worthwhile mentions: “I just bought that old Renault Safrane landbarge with the most advanced PRV that one guy didn’t want to sell to you. Send me the list of parts you need” and “My 1986 Daihatsu Kei car just got rear ended. I think I’ll take my Twingo.”
I like this group :)

I had fun when I went on to the Nashville Oppo meet up.

Guys... we are all SO nuts.
It’s a lot of fun though!

BiTurbo gonna be, well, BiTurbo.

There is more fun to be had this year too!

Meanwhile: Do I use the POS Maxima or do I share a ride or do I say screw it and go to the Nürb in the Summer.

If you want a ride, now would be the time to reserve a seat in Martin’s car. Before Rico reserves all the space left in the car for his carparts :)

I once told a friend (non carguy) about the conversations in the group, and the amount of cars some of us have. He told me that we are weird...
I don’t see why he thinks that xD

Hey, that’s self preservation! If I don’t stuff it to the brim with spare parts, he might unbolt stuff from my car while I’m sleeping. ;)

This is seriously Oppo - have fun!

Wait wait...did the Daihatsu really get rear-ended??? Is it totalled? :(
![]() 03/07/2018 at 15:46 |

No, just a slightly bent bumper.

Few! Glad everybody and the car is OK! That thing is too awesome and too mint to get damaged! :P

Bring a wide variety of radiator hoses. Just to be sure.

She’s fine, just a bump luckily. Bent bumper bracket which I’ve already fixed. I was only lightly on the brakes so I rolled forward which seems to have took the force out of the hit.

Ugh, I wanna go... Stupid Atlantic ocean

Mr gmporschenut is going to conquer this ocean, so he can reach Wales. Join him and slay this feeble ocean together!

No need, just leave the cap off and enough will fall out the sky to fill it up again.

I would, but my extra play funds are going into a motorcycle, not travel sadly.

Haha now you mention it, the whole thing is a little bonkers ;)
Full disclosure, the Fiat is not actually driving at the moment as I’m still piecing together an oil cooler and trying to get the heater to work...

Glad I’ve earnt a reputation for myself ;)
We also got the Midget running in about half an hour. Dead battery and the choke cable was stretched :)

Bonkers in a good way though. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Oh absolutely ;)
This year’s pending Nurburgring trip is going to be epic too :) especially if the 205 makes it ;)

It will certainly make it, I’ll make sure of it. I’ll get the new engine on its registration the Tuesday after the meet.
![]() 03/08/2018 at 05:50 |

Awesome :) how soon after the meet do you think it’ll be running and driving? Excited to see what it’s like :)
![]() 03/08/2018 at 06:05 |

Well, I have to drive it 60 km or so to get it inspected to get the engine on the license. It should be running and driving around the time we’re at Wales. Downside for me is that I moved to the south of Germany, 900 km away, but the CTi and the mechanic friend who’s doing roughly all the work is still back ‘home’.
![]() 03/08/2018 at 08:57 |
|
Oh cool! First drive? I’ll expect a full report :)
Well, 900km should be a good chunk of the run-in miles for your new engine. Might be fun varying the rpm on the motorway, but it’ll put it closer to the ‘ring, no?
![]() 03/08/2018 at 09:18 |
|
Actually, I want to drive it ‘slowly’ for the first 1k km or so, then swap fluids. Including/especially the transmission fluid, as that is a 1.9 GTI unit with the 5th gear swapped in from a 205 turbo diesel transmission for better Autobahn cruising. The TD transmission had some metal scrapings in the fluid, we found out recently... :( All of this before going to ‘Ring, preferably.
I’m actually living further from the Ring than before. Roughly just as far as you, if you ignore the Channel crossing:

Yeah that’s a good plan. The key to bedding in engines nicely though is to vary the rpm while you’re driving for the bed-in period. Helps to clearance the bearings and piston rings. Not too gentle, but not too hard.
Interesting with the TD-swapped 5th for autobahn cruising. Neat idea :) will certainly have the torque to pull it along.

The 205 GTI transmissions are very short geared. Especially the 1.6 one, which is why I didn’t reuse the original CTi box. With a turbo engine using a transmission like that makes no sense. If I have to believe the website I’m looking at right now the 1.6 did 3900 rpm at 120 kmh, the 1.9 3500 rpm. With the diesel 5th I swap the 0.87:1 from the 1.9 to 0.76:1 from the TD, resulting in 3050 rpm at 120 km. Which is the exact same as what the 406 did with the 2.0T.
This is useful as it should handle highway (Autobahn!) driving properly as well. It has 235 Nm (if left stock) at 2500 rpm, versus 132 Nm at 4000 rpm with the original 1.6...
I’ve read that the camshaft of the 2.0T is very mild and you can swap the camshaft from a late 1.9 GTI (or a 2.0 8v from a 306/Xantia) in without hassle. To make it much more lively at higher rpm. What’s your opinion about that? http://websworld.org/marcel/309/tech/heads.html
![]() 03/08/2018 at 12:05 |

Yeah that’s much more civilised for motorway miles :)
Do you know when your boost will start coming in? if you’re dead lucky, it’ll peak at something like 3500 meaning that you’re cruising just off boost for great economy, but with peak boost a short jump away for overtaking.
Cams are interesting with turbo cars, and not something I’ve looked a massive deal into. I know that you usually want a bit of a milder cam profile for turbo applications, but really don’t know enough about it to comment. If it’s a common modification then I’d have confidence it’ll be worthwhile. It’s all research that I plan to do for the X1/9 anyway so I’ll have a look into it :)
Are you having it mapped at all? You’ll probably need to if you are changing the camshaft as it’s pretty rare that stock turbo management systems support engine modifications. Only ones I really know that do are the Saab turbo ones and the one from the Maserati Biturbo (both of which you can dial in different fuelling and boost pressures via dials on the ECUs themselves!).

I mean, Frankentriumph was a dead giveaway, but also the fact that one individual was mentioned concerning four cars in the span of a single sentence was too.

Haha that does sound like my calling card ;) especially seeing as only one of them is on the road at the moment...
